Job Summary

The NAMI Davidson County Board of Directors provides governance, strategic leadership and fiduciary oversight to ensure the organization fulfills its mission and remains financially sustainable, mission-focused and responsive to community needs.

Board members serve as ambassadors for NAMI Davidson County and support the organization’s efforts to improve the quality of life for people with mental illness and their loved ones through support, education, and advocacy.

 

Time Commitment:

Board members should anticipate:

  • Attendance at bi-monthly Board meetings.
  • Participation in committee meetings during alternating months.
  • Attendance at the annual Board retreat.
  • Participation in fundraising, advocacy, and community events throughout the year.
  • Additional volunteer service as needed to support organizational goals.

Board members who miss three consecutive Board meetings without notice or explanation may be considered resigned and subject to replacement in accordance with NAMI Davidson County bylaws.

Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Governance and Strategic Leadership

  • Support and advance the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of NAMI Davidson County.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic plans and organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with NAMI National and NAMI Tennessee standards, as well as applicable federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
  • Review and approve organizational policies as needed.
  • Participate in succession planning for organizational leadership.
  • Support and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director.

2. Board Participation and Engagement

  • Attend and actively participate in regular Board meetings, committee meetings, and the annual Board retreat.
  • Review meeting materials in advance and contribute to thoughtful discussion and decision-making.
  • Serve on at least one Board committee or task force.
  • Share professional expertise and community connections to strengthen the organization.
  • Serve as an ambassador for NAMI Davidson County within the community.

3. Financial Stewardship

  • Review and monitor organizational financial reports and budgets.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
  • Support ethical financial practices and risk management.
  • Assist in maintaining the long-term financial sustainability of the organization.

4. Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Actively support fundraising efforts and community engagement activities.
  • Personally contribute to the organization through financial donations, fundraising, in-kind support, or volunteer service.
  • Meet the Board’s annual contribution expectation of $250 through any combination of:
    • Personal giving
    • Fundraising
    • In-kind contributions
    • Volunteer service outside Board responsibilities (valued at $15 per hour)
  • Participate in fundraising events and donor cultivation activities as appropriate.

5. Advocacy and Community Outreach

  • Promote mental health awareness, recovery, and wellness throughout the community.
  • Support public policy and advocacy initiatives consistent with NAMI’s mission.
  • Build relationships with community partners, stakeholders, and supporters.
  • Help increase awareness of NAMI Davidson County programs and services.

6. Compliance and Ethics

  • Complete annual Conflict of Interest disclosures.
  • Complete annual Title VI Civil Rights Training.
  • Complete annual Ethics Training.
  • Disclose actual or perceived conflicts of interest.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive organizational matters.
  • Act in the best interests of NAMI Davidson County at all times.

Qualifications

  • Current NAMI Davidson County member in good standing. If you are not a member, you can become a member if chosen for the role.
  • Commitment to NAMI’s mission and values.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
  • Willingness to dedicate time, energy, and expertise to support the organization.
  • Experience in nonprofit leadership, finance, fundraising, advocacy, healthcare, education, business, law, marketing, or related fields is welcomed but not required.
